Our History

Built in 1838...

The mill building that we call home was built in 1838, as part of Manchester’s historic Mill District. Stark Mill No. 1 was part of the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company; the world’s largest cotton textile plant. At the plant’s peak in 1911, the complex employed 17,000 people, covered 5,844,340 square feet and produced 237,000,000 yards of cotton yearly.

Changes...

As time progressed, the Millyard saw a noticeable change in its uses. There was a shift from (primarily) textiles, to heavier manufacturing. 400 Bedford Street became home to Anchor Manufacturing (Anchor Electric), who produced electric metering equipment, up until the mid 90s.

Storage & more...

The Mill was purchased by the Morgans in the mid 90s and they opened Morgan Self Storage in 1997. Morgan Self Storage is one of the areas largest, longest standing family owned self storage facilities in the area. The Morgans soon realized that not only was there a need for personable storage services; but there was also a lack of dedicated space for musicians & artists in the Greater Manchester Area.

2003...

Seeing the need for flex spaces for artists & musicians, the Morgans began rennovating two entire floors of the Mill in 2003; creating over 50 spaces to make music & art in.
